The 77075 zip code in south Houston covers 11.3 square miles and is bordered by Hobby Airport to the north, the Gulf Freeway to the east, Beltway 8 to the South, and the train tracks to the west. About 26,000 people live there. Despite its distance from the center of town, it is still part of Houston proper and not a suburb.

Half of the population speak English in their homes; 45% speak Spanish. Another 4% speak an Asian or Pacific Island language. More than a quarter of the population was born in another country, mostly in Mexico, but also in Vietnam and elsewhere. About a fifth are African American, and a third live in single-parent households headed by women. Thirteen percent have an income below the poverty level, which is slightly less than the statewide average.

There are only about 2241 people per square mile in 77075. They live mostly in single-story brick homes with car parks, large yards, chain link fences, and lots of space between one another. Most of the population drive a car to work by themselves. The streets are bordered by gullies designed to channel heavy rainwater out of the neighborhood and prevent flooding. There are few sidewalks, plenty of trailerparks, lots of dogs and “Beware of the Dog” signs, empty lots with horses or cattle grazing on them, small forests of Live Oak trees, auto shops and taquerias, and, from early in the morning until the evening, the sound of jets taking off and landing. There are also numerous Christian churches, lined up next to one another on major streets or tucked away in residential neighborhoods beneath the shade of massive oak trees.

These are all the ones I came across from September through October 2010.*
